Gaokao and China University Admission

Gaokao and China University Admission February 25, 2013 The Gaokao is the all-important exam for university admission in China. If the SAT is a marathon, the Gaokao is an Ironman. For students in China, the Gaokao is the all-important exam that, in many ways, determines their educational future. Its a tough test that requires quite a bit of studying. In the United States, it would be the equivalent of college admissions officers only weighing your SAT score to determine whether or not youre admitted. Only the Gaokao is a whole lot more intense than the SAT. If the SAT is a sprint triathlon (maybe a 400 meter swim, 10K bike, 5K run) , the Gaokao is the Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). Yeah, thats right. And theres quite a bit of unrest in China over the Gaokao exam particular as it relates to gender. Because Chinese females have been doing so well on the exam, Chinese universities have had to admit males with lower Gaokao scores to balance out their classes. So females with higher scores than their male counterparts are being denied admission while the males are getting in. It doesnt seem fair, right? According to an article on the Gaokao and China university admission in The Los Angeles Times, In China, national data on male and female test scores arent made public, but in recent years universities have published scores of incoming students on their websites.  That is how Kale, who scored 614 on her tests in June, discovered that boys had been accepted to the international finance program from her province with scores as low as 609, while 628 was the lowest score for girls who were accepted.  Scouring the websites for evidence of discrimination, womens rights activists have discovered even higher gaps for foreign language and performing arts majors. Shanghai Language University admitted boys from Guangxi province with scores of 551; for girls, the lowest score was 616. If youre a student in China, do you think that theres gender discrimination when it comes to university admission? Has this led you to want to pursue your education in the United States? Let us know your thoughts on the matter by posting below!

Nevertheless, either exam is perfectly acceptable. Youll be at no disadvantage using the ACT, and you should use scores from the exam that you prefer. If your ACT scores are below the lower number in the table above, all hope is not lost. 25% of applicants who attend the SUNY school also had numbers in the bottom 25th percentile. Being admitted will be more challenging with a sub-par score, but it is not impossible. Also note that the admissions standards vary considerably from one campus to another. Binghamton University, for example, is highly selective and nearly all admitted students have both grades and standardized test scores that are well above average. Binghamton is one of the top colleges in New York State. Other campuses such as Morrisville and Cobleskill are far less selective. Your Academic Record Matters More than the ACT Realize that ACT scores are just one part of the application. The most important part of your SUNY application will be your academic record. Be sure you have adequate coursework in key academic areas such as a foreign language and math. Its also important to show that you have challenged yourself, so Advanced Placement (AP) classes, IB classes, Honors classes, and dual enrollment classes are all important for helping to demonstrate your college preparedness.   Holistic Admissions The SUNY admissions folks will also be looking at non-numeric measures, for the four-year colleges and universities in the SUNY network all have holistic admissions. A strong essay and meaningful extracurricular activities  can play an important role in the admissions process. At some campuses, special talents in areas such as sports or music can also help make up for standardized test scores that are less than ideal. Data Source: National Center for Education  Statistics

Description Of The Solar Home Management Interface Design - Samples

Question: Discuss about the Description Of The Solar Home Management Interface Design. Answer: Energy is crucial in every home. Solar energy can be incorporated into homes so that power cannot be a problem anymore since it is affordable. Before installation, a proper interface design should be highlighted for the solar home management. The suggested navigation systems are amongst the best interface designs. The design of the interface was not straightforward since it addresses various issues aiming at meeting the requirements of customers. The model consisted of power off screen, solar mode screen, Battery mode, grid mode and added components mode. There were also help displays ranging from help screen 1 to help screen 6. All the modes and screens one together from a central point in ensuring that the energy flow is monitored, saving power automatically and providing efficient use. The main reason as to why I chose the interface it because it makes intelligent energy management easier and it is cost effective. The interface design fully meets the requirement the user. It is because currently, people want a reliable source of energy which is digital (Han, Choi, Park, Lee Kim, 2014). A system which can operate automatically and alert the user in cases of irregularity of energy flow. The system adequately addresses all the issues since after turning on the condition of the system is displayed on screens. The system shows the percentage of energy remaining in the battery as well as the consumed. The system also statistically displays how power has been consumed for the last three hours. The user can, therefore, plan for the available power and prevent cases of the blackout. The grid mode represents power supply details from the grid. The system is also user-friendly since it has help mode which directs the user. Whenever the system is not in the right condition, it alerts the user through display on the screen using red LED lights. It gives the direction on what action should be taken. The ad opted design covers all the requirement of the user, therefore, being amongst the best (Byun, Hong Park, 2012). The design of the system was influenced by many factors thus adopting the interface. The fact that many people globally are facing the problem of reliable power especially in developing countries motivated the adoption of the design. People are spending valuable sources of energy while we have solar energy which is free. The continuous technology growth also facilitated the passage of the design interface. With modern technologies, operations are being done automatically by use of machines (Niyato, Xiao Wang, 2011). Due to such reasons, a solar home management system which is automatic was urgently needed by many individuals. The systems consume less power and manage gadgets using the force. It is cost effective therefore making it applicable to all people without discrimination. It is easy to operate since it alerts the user in case of the unexpected condition and saves time. The development of the interface design heavily relies on the sunny home manager 2.0 interface. The sunny home manager was developed early and highly incorporated modern technology on its design making it purely automatic (Al-Ali et al, 2011). The sunny home manager monitors all energy flows in the home and automatically identifies potential savings and promoting efficient use of solar energy (Moura, Lopez, Moreno De Almeida, 2013). The sunny home manager consisting of clear visualization of significant energy flow in the household provided a trend which was adopted by the interface design since it is based on the same. The elements of energy flow used in the sunny home manager 2.0 are also applied to the interface. Most of the setup of the interface was based on that adopted by the sunny home manager 2.0. The adopted design is the best towards solving the problems of power failure in many homes. The design interface addresses all concerns relating to the responsible home solar home manager. The fact that the design is based on technological platform form while making use of an affordable source of energy makes it solve the problem. The system provides instrumental data to the user, therefore, enabling him or her to manage the system with fewer inconveniences. The help mode is beneficial since it guides the user on control the order to ensure that it gives the best and enlarging its lifespan. The system provides a reliable manager of ensuring that the available power is managed well is houses. The interface design outstands amongst other models since it is automatic. Leadership Communication Styles Inventory free essay sample

As a manager or leader of an organization of any kind, the power and ability to effectively lead others are in the choices made to build a healthy, motivational, and productive relationship with people on your team. We all influence others in some way, its Just that we seldom realize that we do or how we do it. Power in the workplace has traditionally been defined as force, dominance, assertiveness, strength, invincibility, and authority. In forward thinking corporations, power requires a commitment and a plan of action (Hale, 2010). Power and influence are somewhat interchangeable. Power is the capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others. Power is not the act of changing someonws attitudes or behavior; it is only the potential to do so. You might feel powerful or think you have power over someone else, but this is not power unless you truly have the capacity to influence that person (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). One of the hardest lessons of management is that practically everything that has to be done must be done by others. Manager ¤Ã‚ ¬ws duties not only include directing employees ut controlling the budget, assets, and other Jobs within the organization as well. Leadership is the ability to get people to do what they don ¬wt want to do and like it. In other words, the core problem for leaders in any organization involves getting others to do what is required to accomplish the organization ¤es goals (Michelson). The concept of power and its application to leadership and management has gotten a bad reputation. Terms such as power hungry, abuse of power and corrupted by power have diluted powerws real use and meaning and deprived some leaders f the opportunity to understand and use various forms of power to good purposes (Wood, 2010). I like to believe people misuse their power simply because they have it and are unaware of it. When used in a positive, moral, and ethical manner, power is an excellent resource. It requires the perception of dependence, so people might gain power by convincing others that they have something of value, whether or not they actually control that resource. Consequently power exists when others believe that you control resources they want (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 010). People rely on their emotion more frequently than they realize to make decisions, so to become a more powerful influencer, it is wise to consider othews values, personality, and intelligence and express confidence in the personws ability to accomplish the Job. The type of power applied affects the type of influence the power holder has over the other person or work unit. Everyone has power and I d believe that to be a bad thing. The issue becomes what kind of power a person has and how it is used. The most powerful source is based on one osition within an organization and the authority given in that position (Wood, 2010). An abusive boss can lose respect and influence from their team members. As a leader, your influence and power are not only about getting the Job done, itws about the relationships you develop in the workplace. A supervisor on my Job is retiring in a couple ot months and it seems ner whole attitude and demeanor nas changed. She seems to be on a quest to get all the people she wants out of the company and all that she wants promoted before she leaves. The influence and respect that she once possessed is no longer apparent or given to her and the orale in the office is very low. Her tactics to get the Job done are threatening, humiliating, and demeaning for some of the employees. They are afraid to go above her for the fear of retaliation, so they wait and hope that their Jobs are safe until she retires. French and Raven, social psychologists, identified five sources of power legitimate, coercive, reward, expert, and referent that help the dependent person directly or indirectly achieve his or her goals. Legitimate, reward and coercive are sources of power granted formally by the organization and informally by co-workers; hey are positional powers (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). Legitimate power is an agreement among organizational members that people in certain roles can request certain behaviors of others. It depends on mutual agreement from those expected to abide by this authority (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). True and lasting power comes from being a leader worthy of respect and admiration. If you treat people with dignity and respect, you will build a trusting relationship and people will look up to you, listen to what you say, and want to be like you. Reward power derived from the person ability to control the allocation of rewards valued by others and to remove negative sanctions. Managers have power over the distribution of organizational rewards such as pay, promotions, time off, vacation schedules, and work assignments (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). This power comes with the position and can be taken away if the position is removed. Coercive power is the ability to apply punishment. Employees also have coercive power to ensure that co-workers conform to team norms (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). You have this kind of power when youwre in a position to punish others if they don ¬wt do what you want. People fear the consequences of not doing what has been asked of them. Expert and referent powers are based on an individuws personal power. These powers are based on charisma, likeability, and positive feelings the leader generates among subordinates (Wood, 2010). There is research suggesting that charismatic leadership is negatively related to harmful behaviors in the workplace. For example, transformational leadership was negatively associated with safety accidents which harisma is a large component of (Hale, 2010). These powers originate from the power holders characteristics and are power bases brought to the organization. Expert power is an individualws or work uws capacity to influence others by possessing knowledge or skills that others value (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). This power is based on what you know and will quickly gain you respect and influence in the workplace. It is all about knowing your Job and doing it well and not being afraid in learning all that you can. It could potentially be the basis for a managerial role for an employee. Referent power is a function ofa perso ¬ws interpersonal skills which allows others to identify with them, like them, or respect them and is associated with charismatic leadership (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). People are well liked and are considered role models because of their connection and concern for other people. People who are well-liked and respected nave a tremendous amount ot reterent power. A wise leader knows now and when to apply the right amount of power to influence an individual, group, or situation to move an agenda forward (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). In order to be an effective leader, a person cannot rely solely on either of these positions of power. Leading by example, offering rewards, or threatening punishments all can be used as power tools to accomplish goals, however more power can be gained by sharing it among the team in a more subtle and counterintuitive way (Wood, 2010). If you want your team to be ethical and respectful of each other, I believe the example should start from the top. Using influence tactics well requires a healthy combination of interpersonal, communication, presentation, and assertiveness techniques, verbal skills such as asserting, probing, ersisting, speaking conversationally, and willingness to ask for favors ( (Selling and Persuaion Techniques ). Influence refers to any behavior that attempts to alter someonws attitudes or behaviors (McShane, Steven L, Mary Ann Von Glinow, 2010). You may try to exert your influence through coercion and manipulation and you might even get things done but that isn ¬wt really influencing. Thatws forcing people to do what you want them to do and often against their will. Effective leaders use combinations of various strategies for different purposes under different onditions which can be classified under three categories: retribution, reciprocation, and reason (Michelson).

The Servuction model consists of four factors that directly influence customer’s service experiences. The first three factors are plainly visible to consumers which are servicescape, contact personnel or service provider, other customers. And the last one organizations and system is invisible to the customers, but it impact to the customer’s experience. 3. 1 The Servicescape â€Å"The term servicescape refers to the use of physical evidence to design service environments. Due to the intangibility of services, customers often have trouble evaluating the quality of service objectively. As a result, consumers rely on the physical evidence that surrounds the service to help them from their evaluations. † (John E. G. Bateson, 2011). Hence, the servicescape consists of ambient conditions such as the color, music, scent, layout, lighting, and design in a physical environment. The effective management of servicescape is particularly important to KFC. Due to the intangibility of services, consumers lack objectives sources of information when forming evaluations. As a result, customers often look to the physical evidence that surrounds the service when forming evaluation. Location The location of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Endah Parade is convenient both for customers and employees, because is located near to the entrance on the ground floor of the shopping centre, so they do not need to walk long distance, climb the escalator or wait for elevator. However people who use car need to use escalator or elevator, because parking in Endah Parade is located at lower grand floor. Self Service Not only that, for servicescape KFC use Self Service to make order, as any others fast food restaurants. The client needs to step up to the order place and choose the food, the menu of the food customers will be able to see on the board behind the cashier; after the client choose the food he should order it to the cashier; and while making a payment the food within 30 seconds will be prepared, after this the client can take his order. All these transactions are made at the same place. The line in queue goes so fast so customers will not stay in a queue long time and it means that customers while evaluating physical evidence will not spoil their performance about KFC. Exterior and Interior Design For all their outlets Kentucky Fried Chicken is always using same exterior and interior design. For exterior design they use bright red and white color, so when customers see red and white building they know that it is KFC. Furthermore their mascot Colonel Harland Sanders is also present in outside each of their restaurant. In figure 3 illustrate the exterior design of KFC in Endah Parade, and from this picture in their sign board you will be able to see their mascot. The walls of KFC are made using glass not bricks and stone. This is an advantage to the customers because as they are passing by KFC they can see how the staff is serving the customers and in figure 3 shows that the walls of KFC at Endah Parade is made from the glass. (Figure 3, Exterior model of KFC Source: self made) The interior design of KFC is also same as in any others their outlets. They use same color as outside bright red and white. Moreover, the uniform of KFC staff is standardized in all the countries. They have two type of uniform, all cleaners and cashiers are wearing red T-shirts with KFC logo and black cap; from the picture below, figure 4, illustrates the uniform of employees in Malaysia and in UK, so it proves that in any countries employees of KFC wearing same uniform. The managers of KFC are should wear more office form, shirt and tie, and the figure 5 shows the manager uniform of KFC. (Figure 4, Uniform of employees in Malaysia and UK Source: google. com) (Figure 5, Uniform of managers Source: self made) 3.2 Contact Personnel and Service Providers Contact personnel and service providers are another important aspect of the customer’s experience. Contact personnel are employees other than primary providers that interact with consumer. Service providers are the primary provider of core service, such as dentist, physician or instructor. Employees Employees at KFC restaurant are very friendly, polite and accommodating. Cashiers are the first employee that customers encou nter when coming to KFC, it means that cashier should give to their customers a good mood. When customers ordering food cashiers are always smiling, and always trying to find out the way on how to communicate with customers. For example when a foreign customer does not know local language, the waiters will do everything to understand what customer wants. Apart from that, other employees at KFC are briefly interacting with customers. For example cleaners who keep restaurant clean. It is very important to keep restaurant clean, such as tables, chairs and floor, because hygiene in any restaurants should stand in a first place. Therefore, cleaners doing a big work, because they should always keep restaurant clean, if tables will be dirty customers will not find a place on where to sit, and next time they may not come to this restaurant. Apart from that, they also sometimes interact with customers, like if the customer does not know where to find straw or ketchup or where is washbasin, in KFC he can ask only cleaners, so it means that they should be friendly and polite with the customers, and with smiling in face show where they can find it. Last but not least, employees play an important role in any service provider companies, and in order to make customers more satisfied companies must provide training for their employee; and KFC provides training for their employees every two month. Mangers Managers are the people who guide the spirit of KFC. The managers of KFC shape the character and atmosphere in the restaurant. They are coaching employees to achieve excellence. Managers need to make a great team from the employees, because this will makes better customer service, and also it will  lead in increasing sales and profitability, which is one of the main goals. Managers of KFC are not only focused on commercial, but also they are creative in the way that they solve sometimes-conflicting challenges of managing budgets, driving sales and growing teams. Managers are the driving force behind ensuring restaurant achieves the level of operational excellence that meets the high standards KFC strives for, and that customers d eserve. 3. 3 Other Customers The success of many service encounters depends on how effectively the service firm manages its clientele. A wide range of service establishments such as restaurants, hotels, airlines, and physicians’ offices serve multiple customers simultaneously. Hence, other customers can have a profound impact on an individual’s service experience. Research has shown that the presence of other customers can enhance or detract from an individual’s service experience. TV KFC provides TV for their customers, so when the clients waiting for their turn in queue or while eating they can watch a TV. Malaysian KFC provides Astro TV for their customers, but according to the rules they are allowed to put only sports channels and their advertising video. However, in Malaysia KFC do not provide TV for all their outlets. From the figure below, shows that KFC in bukit tinggi provides TV with Astro for their customers, but in Cheras they do not provide it. (Figure 6, JOM KFC Source: http://kfc. com. my/jom-kuala-lumpur. php) Free Access to Wi-Fi Besides that, KFC provides free Wi-Fi access. They aim of providing Wi-Fi in KFC is same as for TV, for people who are waiting for their turn and people who are eating. Not only that, sometimes people like to come to KFC order juice and just seat and use their Wi-Fi. In Malaysia KFC uses TN Wi-Fi, and  unlike TV, KFC provides Wi-Fi for all their outlets. In hence, KFC is caring about their other customers and they doing everything to keep them in a good impression and it mean that they will suggest to other customers to visit KFC, because they have everything to make customers feel themselves convenient in their restaurant. 3. 4 Invisible Organization and Systems Invisible organization and syst em refers to the rules, regulations and processes upon which the organization is based. Although they are invisible to the customers, they have a very profound effect on the consumer’s service experience. Kitchen At KFC restaurants customers are able to see only a small part of their kitchen, like the chickens which they currently have and drinks which they provide, but customers will never see what is going on inside the kitchen; because it will ultimately impact the customer’s dining experience. Moreover, to prepare so delicious chicken in KFC, takes only 20 minutes. At least 13 people are working in the restaurant At any time in KFC working at least 13 people; 2 persons working at the cashier, around 3 persons cleaning the restaurant and the rest working in the kitchen. But during a traffic time, like lunch or dinner, more employees working there because to serve customers as fast as possible they will need more people at the cashier to serve customers, more people in kitchen to make food faster and more people for cleaning because they need to wash floor and also they need to always keep tables clean, so that customers will be able to sit on where they want, not where is clean. Light Decorations KFC found out that light decoration is also plays important role to make people feel more comfortable in their restaurant. The light in their restaurant in not bright and not dark, they are using warm white glow to make a cozy atmosphere in their restaurant. It is help them to realize a beautiful and modern lighting and it is perfectly fit into red and white KFC design. 4. 0 The Challenges and Recommendations Perceived service quality can be defined as, according to the model, the difference between consumers’ expectation and perceptions which eventually depends on the size and the direction of the four gaps concerning the delivery of service quality on the company’s. First Challenge and Recommendation Sometimes at late evening around 9 p. m. employees in KFC are looks tired and they are not friendly like in a day. When customer want to make order cashier is not smiling and ask customer say again what he wants to order. Also from time to time cashier looking at the queue if there any other customers or haw many customers in the queue. This is happen because KFC do not have enough employees to serve and even sometimes employee may not come to the work and because of these factors some employee have to work whole day and at the end of the day he will looks very tired. To avoid such tired employees, the manager of KFC should hire more employees. Besides that, managers of KFC already made some penalty for the workers who do not come to the work, but it still happening, that employee does not come to the work. To avoid such situation, managers of KFC should make another strategy, to motivate employees to follow the rules. For example increase the penalty or if the employee did not come to the work 3 times in one month, managers should dismiss him and hire another person who will follow the rule. Second Challenge and Recommendation In the some KFC restaurants such as in Endah Parade customers will be able to feel the smell of oil in which they are preparing chicken and some customers do not like this smell; and also clients can feel the smell of expired food, because cleansers’ throwing food which customer did not finish to the rubbish and the rubbish is inside the restaurant where people eating. KFC restaurants cannot avoid the smell of oil because such restaurants is located in the closed premises, such as at shopping malls, so the oil cannot  gone from the restaurant and it will stay for a long time. Furthermore, KFC cannot avoid the smell of expired food because the space of the restaurant is too small and they do not have a space to put rubbish away from clients. Third Challenge and Recommendation When customer wants to order some food at KFC such as nuggets or French fries he must wait for a few minutes, while the food will be prepared. A cashier will give to c ustomer order number, and client should seat and wait until when they will prepare the food. While waiting a customer can became angry because he is hungry and want to eat, and next time he may choose to eat in other restaurant where he does not need to wait. KFC do that because they want to give to their customers’ fresh food and if KFC will prepare nuggets before when someone will order it will be not fresh and cold or even if for a long time no one will order nuggets it can become spoiled and employees will have to throw it away. Recommendation for this can be that KFC should to come up with a new technology, like they can add something to their French fries and nuggets so it does not spoil too fast. Conclusion All in all, KFC is the name of trust for the customers because there is no compromise on the quality of the food, and no one can make so delicious chicken like they do. KFC fully focus on the quality of food that is why it is the hallmark of excellence among the customers. After analyzing KFC restaurant by using Servuction model I can conclude that all of its components are satisfied at the high level. The Servuction model illustrates the impact of the servicescape, other clients, contact personnel and service providers and invisible organization on customers of the restaurant.

I Have a Dream - Childrens Book About MLK Junior

I Have a Dream - Childrens Book About MLK Junior On August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his I Have a Dream speech, a speech that is still remembered and honored today. I Have a Dream by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., published in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the minister and civil rights leaders dramatic speech, is a childrens book for all ages that adults will also find meaningful. Excerpts of the speech, chosen for their accessibility to childrens understanding, are paired with the stunning oil paintings of artist Kadir Nelson. At the end of the book, which is in picture book format, youll find the full text of the Dr. Kings speech. A CD of the original speech is also included with the book. The Speech Dr. King delivered his speech to the more than a quarter of a million people participating in the March for Jobs and Freedom. He delivered his speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. While stressing nonviolence, Dr. King made it clear that, Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. In the speech, Dr. King outlined his dream for a better America. While the speech, which was interrupted by cheers and applause from the enthusiastic audience, only lasted about 15 minutes, it and the integrated march had a profound impact on the Civil Rights Movement. The Books Design and Illustrations I had the opportunity to hear Kadir Nelson speak at the 2012 Book Expo America Childrens Literature Breakfast about the research he did, the approach he took, and his goals in creating the oil paintings for I Have a Dream. Nelson said he had to memorize Dr. Kings speech on short notice as a fifth grader just after moving to a new school. He said doing so made him feel stronger and more confident, and he hoped I Have a Dream would similarly affect children today. Kadir Nelson said that at first he wondered what he could contribute to Dr. Kings magnificent vision. In preparation, he listened to Dr. Kings speeches, watched documentaries and studied old photographs. He also visited Washington, D.C. so he could create his own photographic reference and better imagine what Dr. King saw and did. He and the editor worked to decide on what portions of Dr. Kings I Have a Dream would be illustrated. They chose segments that were not only important and well known but that spoke loudest to children. In illustrating the book, Nelson created two types of paintings: those that illustrated Dr. King giving the speech and those that illustrated Dr. Kings dream. At first, Nelson said he was unsure how to differentiate the two. It ended up that when illustrating the setting and mood of the day, Nelson created oil paintings of the scene as it was during Dr. Kings speech. When it came to illustrating the dream, Nelson said he tried to illustrate not the words so much as the concepts they represented and he used a bright cloud-like white background. Only at the end of the book, do the dream and reality merge. Kadir Nelsons artwork wonderfully illustrates the drama, the hopes and the dreams laid out that day in Washington, D.C. by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The choice of excerpts and Nelsons sensitive illustrations combine to create meaning for even younger children who may not yet be mature enough to understand the full speech. The scenes that look out over Dr. Kings audience emphasize the breadth of his impact. The large close-up paintings of Dr. King emphasize the significance of his role and his emotions as he delivers the speech. Martin Luther King, Jr - Childrens Books and Other Resources There are several books about Martin Luther King, Jr. that I particularly recommend for children 9 and older who are interested in learning more about the civil rights leaders life. by Doreen Rappaport, provides an overview of Kings life and packs an emotional punch with its dramatic illustrations by Bryan Collier. The second, Portraits of African American Heroes features a portrait of Dr. King on the cover. He is one of 20 African Americans, men and women, featured in the nonfiction book by Tonya Bolden, along with sepia-toned portraits of each by Ansel Pitcairn. For educational resources, see Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Lesson Plans You Can Use and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: General Information and Reference Material. Youll find additional resources in the linkboxes and below. The Illustrator Kadir Nelson Artist Kadir Nelson has won numerous awards for his childrens book illustrations. He has also written and illustrated several award-winning childrens books: We Are the Ship, his book about the Negro Baseball League, for which he won the Robert F. Sibert Medal in 2009. Children who read Heart and Soul will learn about the Civil Rights Movement and the important role that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. played. The CD Inside the front cover of I Have a Dream is a plastic pocket with a CD in it of Dr. Kings original I Have a Dream speech, recorded on August 28, 1963. It is interesting to read the book, then the entire text of the speech and, then, listen to Dr. King speaking. By reading the book and discussing the illustrations with your children, youll gain insight as to the meaning of Dr. Kings words and how your children perceive them. Having the entire text in print allows older children to ponder Dr. Kings words more than once. Dr. King was a compelling speaker and what the CD does, is allows listeners to experience for themselves Dr. Kings emotion and impact as he spoke and the crowd responded. My Recommendation This is a book for family members to read and discuss together. The illustrations will help younger children to grasp more of the meaning of Kings speech and will help all ages to better understand both the significance and the impact of Dr. Kings words. The addition of the text of the entire speech at the end of the book, along with a CD of Dr. King delivering the speech, make I Have a Dream an excellent resource for the 50th anniversary of Dr. Kings speech and beyond. This may directly affect the infidelity of the four lovers in the forest, Hermia, Helena, Lysander, Demetrius.

The Pros and cons of globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Pros and cons of globalization - Essay Example The decentralization of economies and goods allowed trade, commerce and services to be transferred to other countries, regardless of distance. Globalization is not only confined to economic sectors, but it has also given rise to the adaptation of social, political and administrative aspects of other countries (Maharjan, 2006). For example the integration of EU made the region competitive by following the common EU foreign policy. EU remains an example where balance is maintained by social solidarity, allowing freedom of movement and establishment across different states (Steinmeier, 2006). The anti-globlist view globalization as a negative phenomenon that has is making rich more richer and poor more poorer. They argue that globolisation has increased poverty and diluted responsibility to the capital owners, slashed down the jobs and increased threats to resources in poor countries with no solution in place. While others mention that positive impact of globalization has removed barriers across the states, accelerating the growth of reforms and allowed greater information access to all parts of the world. (Kennedy, 2001). Globalization has pros and cons and has different interpretations in different continents, which will be discussed further in this essay. The arriv Benefits of Globalization The arrival of global market has allowed the aspiration of big players to expand their niche and derive maximum profit in the global market made possible through geo-economic expansion. Globalization guarantees this sustainable competitiveness through a steady leadership of technological networks, generating added value and production facilities with unlimited human capability. It contributes more to the global development producing greater scientific and technological resources. Even the countries that do not have such vast resources still play essential role in over all global development (Nikolayev, 2004). One of the most important roles of globalization is its economic role in international trade and economy. According to Visto (2002) globalization is competition and reorganization, attracting countries that were in need of investment and such investment improved their economic condition. One such example is Mauritius, where per head income has increased from $500 to 1600 due to foreign investment. The foreign direct investment involves a long reflects a lasting interest in the host country. It implies that the investors have enormous control in another country's economy due to its own interest, which ultimately leads to economic development. Thus any increase in FDI flow is directly associated with increase in GDP. FDI is undertaken by large and technologically advanced firm, which accelerate the speed of economic pace on one sided and also helps in transfer of technology in the host country with heavy return for the firms and provides more jobs in the countries where jobs are scarce. For example when Toyota setup car plants in countries outside Japan, it requires higher level of standard to maintain the quality of it products, which means training the local workers. Thus if Toyota gets the competitive advantage, the host countries gets the skills and jobs. The recent joint ventures of China with Japanese companies are also such move by the Chinese entrepreneurs to get skill directly

BFS 3440-07B BUILDING CONSTRUCTION FOR FIRE PROTECTION (BFS3440-07B) Essay - 7

BFS 3440-07B BUILDING CONSTRUCTION FOR FIRE PROTECTION (BFS3440-07B) - Essay Example When high rise structures unfortunately catch a fire, both the residents/occupants and the crew face a number of challenges. Some of them are discussed below. 1- The most common challenge is to cope with the smoke. In a high rise structure building, the smoke circulates differently from that of the low rise building. The greater height of the building having a low air pressure allows the smoke to move briskly. Most of the deaths during the fire occur due to the suffocation created by the smoke. When the smoke is inhaled, it can burn the lungs. The smoke obscures the eyesight of the occupants as well as the fire fighters. Both of them can not coordinate and the delay results in the death of the occupants or collapse of the building on its occupants. 2- In the high rise structures the exit ways are very few. The scarcity of the exits is a serious challenge for the occupants as well as relievers, because removal of a great number of people through a few exits is very difficult. This lea ds to a greater death rate. 3- The high rise structures are availed by mixed types of occupancies like residences and commercials etc. which is again a challenge. The fire fighters are supposed to adopt different strategies for different occupancies. This is a time consuming procedure and encompasses great risks. 4- Fighting the fire in high rise structures is not an easy task. It requires a greater number of crew and equipments to extinguish the fire as compared in the low rise buildings. (U.S. Fire Administration,

Maya Angelou Stories Essay Essay

Maya Angelou, within amazing stories has revealed the importance of perseverance, staying strong in moments of struggle, having the will to overcome difficulties, as well as having dreams that sometimes seem unreachable and yet believing that it is a gift to survive. In many of her motivating quotes, she expresses, â€Å"I’m always inspired by men and women who rise†¦That ability to rise is nobleness of the human spirit. This clearly displays how her optimism in life has made her rise when fallen and has helped her make life teaching contributions by writing stories and poems that become valuable for all humans to endure life’s rough path also helping readers see life with a different perspective. In the stories, â€Å"I know why the Caged Bird Sings†, â€Å"New Directions†, and in the poems â€Å"Caged Bird† and â€Å"Woman Work†, Angelou has written about many of her own experiences and taught us what humans will encounter, â€Å"fail at, dream, and still survive. † Even the ones who have suffered the most have a lot to teach. The story, â€Å"I know why the Caged Bird sings† and poem, â€Å"Caged bird† are important comparison regarding Angelou’s lesson. These contents are both similar since in the story, Angelou observes how all the cotton pickers long freedom making it a metaphor to caged birds in a way that all they want is to be free and able to fly. Most commonly, they both share the same feeling of being lost and trapped and lack the same rights as the ones that are free. The caged bird represents the cotton pickers and the African Americans meaning that they cannot have freedom and are ensnared in a world of no rest and hard work, regarding their colored skin. This shows how the cotton pickers and caged birds have dreams that sometimes even seem unreachable and impossible to defeat since they never even had the chance to think that someday, freedom would form part in their lives. Angelou reveals throughout these selections, how people faced hardships growing up in the segregated south. This story also shows Angelou’s true account of growing up as the poem connects to the way she probably felt as she experienced difficulties. She recites, â€Å"The sounds of the new morning had been replaced with grumbles bout cheating houses, weighted scales, snakes, skimpy cotton and dusty rows. In later years I was to confront the stereotyped picture of gay song-singing cotton pickers with such inordinate rage that I was told even by fellow Blacks that my paranoia was embarrassing. But I had seen the fingers cut by the mean little cotton bolls, and I had witnessed the backs and shoulders and arms and legs resisting any further demands. † This clearly illustrates how hard everything became and how the only thing she could do to bring her hopes up and release her anger, was sing, just like the caged bird. Angelou says in her poem, â€Å"the caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. † Indeed, as Angelou? s feelings relate to the caged birds’ feelings, all they could ask for was freedom. In the selection, â€Å"New Directions,† Angelou as the speaker is very motivational in what life may teach to people and how they should deal with certain outcomes of failure. She is a persevering woman that always looks forward for what good is to come and is very conscious about difficulties she may encounter in the way. This story shows how life has many courses from which people can choose and sometimes there are possibilities of getting lost or going the wrong way but what she tries to display and let people interpret is that no matter how many ways one turns, or how many times one gets lost, it is never too late to change direction and strive for success. Clearly, failure is an important step that leads to success; it all depends on one? s attitude towards achieving it. Angelou really shows the value of perseverance and how humans should encounter problems. She says, â€Å"She had indeed stepped from the road which seemed to have been chosen for her and cut herself a brand-new path. In years that stall became a store where customers could buy cheese, meal, syrup, cookies, candy, writing tablets, pickles, canned goods, fresh fruit, soft drinks, coal, oil, and leather soles for worn-out shoes. † This displays a great example on how she failed in many jobs, took different paths, but with will and tenacity ended up with her own perfect stall that finally succeeded and made her feel proud. To achieve goals, humans have to turn many ways which sometimes will be full of rocks and others full of flowers until they find their own piece of land and make up their garden. This is what Angelou reveals with this great selection. A good mother does not only care for her child, guide him all way through, pay for his education but keeps on working until sometimes rest is not even part of their lives due to all the duties and responsibilities that are far more important than rest. This next poem, â€Å"Woman Work† expresses in detail how even though some people work the entire day with almost no hours of sleep and rest, still survive. Angelou illustrates how the only thing some humans desire is to rest while others complain about working for a few times a day or even a few times a week or month. This deeply reveals how hard life can be for some people that do not even ask for luxurious gifts but for the gift of rest only. In this poem, Angelou tries to convey how the woman feels by listing various activities making it seem never ending by the use of rhythm. She states, â€Å"Storm, blow me from here with your fiercest wind let me float across the sky ‘Til I can rest again. † This shows how the woman even sees the serenity in life as an unreachable goal. It is deeply a strong theme of how the ones who have freedom and have the necessary money to live have to be grateful while others, who do not, are entirely grateful for few hours of rest. To conclude, Angelou was not only a woman who went through many hard times as a child and further on learned life lessons, but is a woman to venerate and thank for great contributions that she has made by her amazing written selections; both poems and stories that help readers build their own perspective of life in general. To display these contents, within her stories and poems, she used many metaphors, rich language, rhythm and descriptive actions that bring the audience into the readings and make them feel as if they were living it themselves. They once said anonymously, â€Å"Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you’ve ever been, to stand up taller than you ever were. † This quote defines the rule of life. To rise, everyone has to have fallen. Every time life brings people down, life itself teaches them to come back up with perseverance and handling problems properly. All themes that Angelou reveals are lessons that will only make humans fly freely, sing higher and rise into better persons granting them the choice of what direction to go and what path to build.
